Government
Uzbekistan has a president, a prime
minister, and a cabinet of ministers. The president, elected
by popular vote, is the highest ranking public servant. He
appoints the prime minister, cabinet members, and all major
government officials, including judges and heads of regional
administrations. The 250 deputies of the unicameral Oliy Majlis
(Parliament) are elected to five-year terms. The judges of
the Supreme Court are nominated by the president and confirmed
by the Oliy Majlis.
The
dominant political party in Uzbekistan is the People's Democratic
Party of Uzbekistan. It was formed after the Communist Party
was disbanded in 1991, and this party has kept much of the
Communist Party's membership. Other political parties are
the Social Democratic Party (ADOLAT), the Democratic National
Rebirth Party (Milliy Tiklanish), the Fatherland Progress
Party (Vatan Tarakkiyoti), and the Fidokorlar Party.
